Lot 46a, Auction 3/1/2024: Prehistoric Anasazi Black Mesa Black on White Canteen

Sold

Native American, Southern Colorado Plateau, Anasazi, Tusayan (Kayenta), Tusayan White Ware, Black Mesa Black-on-White, ca. 1000 to 1100 CE. A delightful pottery canteen boasting an orb-shaped body surmounted by a narrow spout and twin strap handles. Adorned in the Black Mesa Black-on-White tradition, the vessel’s rotund shape is accentuated by hand-painted geometric designs of nested zigzag and steppe motifs. These abstract patterns may have been inspired by lightning or some other natural phenomenon in the dramatic landscape of the Southwest. A fabulous example of Anasazi pottery! Size: 5″ W x 5.1″ H (12.7 cm x 13 cm)

Condition: Professionally repaired with area of restoration and pottery added for support and areas of repainting. Light surface wear as shown with some areas of fire-darkening. Otherwise, very nice presentation with good remaining pigments.

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, purchased from Pook & Pook Auction, December 2023
