Lot 18, Auction 4/26/2024: Tall Greek Cypro-Archaic Oinochoe w/ Bull’s Eyes

Ancient Greece, Cyprus, Iron Age, Cypro-Archaic Phase, ca. 900 to 750 BCE. A hand-built pottery oinochoe of substantial size with an egg-shaped body, a tapered cylindrical neck, a trefoil spout, and a bifurcated handle arching down to the shoulder. The russet-hued exterior is decorated with ample fine-line stripes that form concentric circles, bullseye patterns, and petite circles, some of which overlap with other details. The front set of concentric circles is adorned in the middle with a white-petal flower that stands out amongst the geometric embellishments. Size: 9″ Diameter x 13.5″ H (22.9 cm x 34.3 cm)

Condition: Professionally repaired, with infill in some small areas, and resurfacing with overpainting. Minor abrasions and nicks, with light pitting, and fading to original pigment in scattered areas, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to most motifs. Previous inventory label beneath foot.
