In stock

Near East/Middle East, Islamic world, probably Persia (Iran), ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A striking pottery sphero-conical vessel featuring a rare band of inscribed Arabic calligraphy wrapping around the sloped shoulder. Formed from red clay rich with mica deposits, the vessel is adorned in relief decoration of target-motifs below the shoulder, and a row of star designs along the tiered neck which leads to the perforated top. This distinctive type of vessel has been excavated in many Islamic countries, and its function has sparked many theories, including its use as a grenade, a vessel for holding ointments, a flask for water, or a gourd for beer or “fuqa.” Size: 3″ L x 3.4″ W x 4″ H (7.6 cm x 8.6 cm x 10.2 cm)

Condition: Chipping to rim of top and shoulder and nicks and abrasions as shown, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, intact and very nice with good remaining detail and encrustations and earthen deposits in areas. Insect remains on interior.

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
