Pre-Columbian, Caribbean area, perhaps Dominican Republic, Taino (Arawak) Indians, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A wonderful bowl carved from mottled stone in hues of cream, wheat, and beige that depicts an abstract zoomorphic creature, perhaps a turtle, or a zoomorphic entity known as a zemi. The frontal head protrudes from the ovoid body with deep-set eyes and a pointed beak while the legs are tucked tightly against the body and adorned with curvilinear striations. Interestingly, a second, more petite head emanates from the back end of the vessel, perhaps illustrating the birthing of a new zemi. Size: 13.875″ L x 10.2″ W x 4.4″ H (35.2 cm x 25.9 cm x 11.2 cm)
Taino art is comprised of many cult objects associated with the worship of “zemis.” The term zemi refers to deities, ancestors, or earth spirits. Zemis like this example are believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits. Owners of zemi figures traditionally honored them with offerings of food or precious gifts. Each Zemi had its own identity and name, personality, and powers. These intriguing figures were also used for stands, reliquaries, and personal adornment, with many serving as implements in ceremonies involving a vegetal entheogen known as cohoba – a hallucinogenic powder or paste that was inhaled through snuff tubes.
Condition: Abrasions and pitting across most surfaces, with minor softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and excellent. Great surface smoothness throughout, and lovely stone coloration.
