East Asia, China, Republic period, ca. 20th century CE. A commanding and archaically styled jade plaque carved in sinuous swirling relief, evocative of the abstract ritual aesthetics associated with the prehistoric Hongshan culture of northeast China (ca. 4000 to 3000 BCE). The design features mirrored scroll motifs that undulate in rhythmic curves, suggesting the flowing energy of clouds or the coiled movement of early chi dragons. Executed in translucent brown-green nephrite, the stone reveals warm amber tones when held to light, with visible mineral inclusions and areas of russet staining that enhance its sense of age. While the motif and material echo known Hongshan forms – particularly the abstracted scrolls of pig dragon pendants and ceremonial plaques – the unusually large scale and polished surface finish suggest a more recent creation. Size: 8.8″ L x 4.5″ W (22.4 cm x 11.4 cm)

Condition: Some light surface wear, but otherwise intact and excellent.

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired from Arts du Monde, imported into the US prior to 2000
