Near East, Israel, Hebron, ca. 19th century CE. A collection of over 70 Hebron glass beads strung as a necklace. These distinctive beads were produced from salt glass using winding or molding techniques. They are characterized by pitted, matte surfaces and softly weathered hues of pale green, turquoise, and yellow. Commonly known as “Kano beads,” they were widely traded across West Africa, especially in Nigeria. In those contexts, they functioned both as personal adornment and as a form of cultural currency. Size of strand doubled: 28″ L (71.1 cm); largest bead: 0.8″ L x 0.5″ W (2 cm x 1.3 cm)
Condition: Strung in modern times on a modern monofilament wire. Pitting and weathering to beads as shown.
