Lot 155, Auction 4/20/2026: Roman Bronze and Brass Fibulae – Set of 6
$292.50
In stock
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A concise grouping of six Roman fibulae, this lot includes one example in leaded bronze, two in brass, two in copper alloy, and one in leaded brass, reflecting the metallurgical range of Imperial workshops. The forms vary from arched and hinged types to crossbar and openwork examples, with features such as tapered feet, rounded knops, pierced bows, and surviving catch plates that illustrate the technical diversity of Roman fastening devices. Used to secure cloaks and tunics, fibulae functioned as both practical garment fasteners and subtle markers of identity, with alloy and style often shaped by regional and chronological preferences. Preserved with natural patina, these brooches offer a compact study in Roman dress, craftsmanship, and everyday life across the Empire. Size of largest: 2.5″ L x 0.3″ W (6.4 cm x 0.8 cm)
Condition: All fragmentary and unwearable with age expected weathering to surfaces. Rich patina and encrustations throughout.
