$975.00
In stock
Central Asia, Russia / Georgia, North Caucasus region, Koban culture, Late Bronze to Iron Age, ca. 1200 to 350 BCE. A decorated bronze axe head featuring a sinuous neck adorned with etched grooves and engraved animal motifs. On both sides of the blade, stags are depicted prancing in profile, with large antlers rising prominently from their heads. This motif was popular among Bronze Age cultures in the northern Caucasus and persisted among the later Scythian tribes who conquered the region – likely a symbol of masculine virility. Similar bronze and copper-alloy objects have been discovered in ancient warrior graves, suggesting their ritual or symbolic significance. Size: 6.5″ L x 3.3″ W (16.5 cm x 8.4 cm)
Condition: Heavy green patina and oxidation throughout. Some rubbing and softening to stag motifs but visible.
Provenance: private London, UK collection
