Lot 7, Auction 4/12/2026: 2 Large Mosasaur Fossil Slabs, Vertebrae, Skull & Teeth
$1,040.00
In stock
North Africa, Upper Cretaceous, ca. 80 to 66 million years ago. Two stone matrices preserving the fossilized remains of a Mosasaur, including a section of the spinal column and portions of the upper skull and jutting jaw with several intact teeth! The bones are embedded within fossiliferous limestone that also contains impressions and fragments of marine shells, adding context to the ancient seafloor environment. The composition suggests the animal settled on the seabed after death, gradually buried and preserved over time. These formidable marine reptiles possessed streamlined bodies, laterally flattened tails, and paddle-like limbs, moving through warm shallow seas in pursuit of fish, sharks, and other prey. During the Late Cretaceous they achieved a broad global distribution across ancient oceans and inland seaways. Size of larger matrix: 17″ L x 12″ W x 4″ H (43.2 cm x 30.5 cm x 10.2 cm)
Condition: Repaired and restored with some infill to gaps and matrix to stabilize the material. 95% or more original material. Losses to teeth and chips to remaining. Loss to tip of jaw, and this area is thin and should be handled with care.
