Western Europe, Germany, Eichstatt, Solnhofen (Altmuhltal) Formation, Jurassic Period, ca. 160 million years ago. A shrimp fossil preserved in a large limestone matrix slab displaying excellent articulation! The prawn is probably in the prehistoric Aeger genus; the streamlined body is prepared to be slightly raised above the rest of the surrounding matrix and the orange hues contrast and highlight the exoskeleton. Light touchups to the fine, lengthy antennae and feathery pleopods helps bring to life this prehistoric crustacean! Size of shrimp: 3.3″ W x 3.2″ H (8.4 cm x 8.1 cm); of matrix: 11.6″ W x 8.6″ H (29.5 cm x 21.8 cm); 9.5″ H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Famous for producing an astonishing diversity of rare and most intricately preserved fossils found anywhere in the world, the Solnhofen Lithographic Limestone Formation of southern Germany is legendary. Fine quality Solnhofen fossils are now much rarer than in past years since many quarries are now closed to commercial operations and the use of modern machinery often destroys many fossils.

Condition: Professionally prepared and excavated. Natural layer striations as shown. Light touchup with pigment to antennae.

Provenance: private Texas, USA Collection
