Pre-Columbian, Belize, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A finely proportioned chert blade of elongated, lanceolate form demonstrates the precision and control of Maya lithic craftsmanship. Knapped from a single piece of translucent chert, the blade tapers gracefully to a sharp distal point, while the proximal end narrows into a short tang, likely intended for hafting onto a shaft. The uniface construction is evident in the flaking pattern, with one face carefully worked through controlled percussion to create a slightly convex surface, while the reverse retains smoother areas of the original stone. Broad, shallow flake scars run along the length of the blade, producing a subtle rippling texture that catches the light across its pale gray and honey-toned surface. Size: 11.6″ L x 2.4″ W (29.5 cm x 6.1 cm)

The overall symmetry and refined edge suggest a skilled artisan, with the long cutting edges carefully shaped for efficiency. Such blades could function as spear points or large cutting implements, used in hunting, warfare, or specialized tasks. Their form also lends itself to potential ceremonial use, where finely made stone objects carried symbolic as well as practical value. The material itself, a high-quality chert, was prized by the Maya for its ability to fracture predictably, allowing for the production of sharp, durable edges.
