Lot 267, Auction 4/20/2026: 20th C. Painting of Soldiers Marching through a River
$780.00
In stock
Anonymous (20th century). Soldiers marching through a river. Oil on canvas, n.d. Signed “G. LE T.” at lower right. A striking oil painting depicting a group of soldiers crossing a river into a densely packed forest, all rendered in a Post-Impressionistic manner reminiscent of Vincent Van Gogh with swirling strokes and a palette of deep blues, greens, and grays. The men march diagonally to the right as they gradually fade into thick wood. Each wears a hefty rucksack swung over his shoulder with a rifle in hand and a conical cap, suggestive of East Asian or Vietnamese culture, crowning his head. A waterfall cascades down to a stony brook in the distance eventually flowing to the river seen in the foreground. The artist’s use of scrolling, impasto brushstrokes grants the trees a sense of energy and movement that unifies the composition; their upward-reaching forms calling to mind themes of vitality and growth. Size of painting: 37.75″ W x 38.5″ H (95.9 cm x 97.8 cm); of frame: 43.75″ W x 44.5″ H (111.1 cm x 113 cm)
Condition: “G. LE T.” at lower right. Set in custom frame with gallery paper and suspension wire on verso for display. In excellent overall condition.
