Lot 119b, Auction 4/12/2026: Three Peruvian Wool Ponchos & Aguayo Textiles
$325.00
In stock
South America, Peru / Bolivia, Aymara & Quechua cultures, ca. mid-20th century CE. A collection of three woven textiles including ponchos and an aguayo (manta) rectangular cloth. The group features bold geometric patterning and vibrant aniline dyes arranged in traditional banded and geometric compositions. Woven in wool, likely sheep rather than camelid fiber, the textiles reflect continued regional weaving traditions adapted for the modern market. Size: 47″ L x 40″ W (119.4 cm x 101.6 cm)
Condition: Larger poncho shows heavy use with scattered stains, tears, and small holes; it remains structurally stable and may benefit from careful spot cleaning to improve presentation. The aguayo exhibits wear consistent with age and use, including threadbare areas, fiber loss, an old stitched patch, minor tears, and edge fraying, though the weave remains stable overall. The smaller poncho has fraying to the tassels but is otherwise intact. All pieces show light staining and areas of discoloration.
Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, before 2000
