Lot 10a, Auction 4/19/2024: Early Chinese Qing Wood Baby Stroller / Cart

$446.25

In stock

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A rare wooden baby chair and cart with a built-in wooden seat, a sliding bar for keeping the infant seated, and fu lion finials. The child can sit or stand depending on the bar placement, and blankets or small toys could be stored under the seat. The chair is a hefty and solid design with wheels for maneuvering the chair from room to room, but it was likely not intended for pulling long distances like a pram / stroller. Thoughtfully designed for functionality, aesthetic beauty, and symbolic protection with the inclusion of fu lions and the openwork front panel of a rider on a mythical qilin. Qilin are interpreted as a good omen of peace and prosperity. Size: 20.5″ L x 17.75″ W x 23″ H (52.1 cm x 45.1 cm x 58.4 cm)

Condition: The axle pins are missing and have been replaced with match sticks, and wood wheels might be old replacements. Light wear, abrasions and chips to wood, but otherwise intact and great antique condition. Wheels turn and wood has a nice patina.

Provenance: private collection of the late Karming Wong; approximate date of acquisition: late 1970 to early 1980
