Magna Graecia, South Italic, Apulian or Campanian, early Hellenistic period, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. An exceptional pottery pouring vessel known as an epichysis, possessing a characteristically spool-shaped base with a slender spout and long, raised loop handle, and a pair of molded masks flaking either side of the area where handle meets spout. The smooth, black-glazed vessel displays a pair of applied red-orange stripes along the base as well as a ring of incised tongues with central maroon-hued bars surrounding the base of the neck. The ringed spout mouth as well as the hair of each mask are colored in a similar maroon pigment, adding an extra element of color to the elegant presentation. Condition: Surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age as expected, some fading to pigmentation, and some hairline fissures as a result of age and not repair, otherwise intact and choice. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas. Nice faint silvery iridescence along some glazed areas.
