Moche Bi-Chrome Stirrup Vessel – Cargador Form- Lot 164, Auction 12/20/2018

Sold

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche V, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished pottery vessel with a planar base, globular body, rounded shoulders, a wide stirrup-shaped handle, and a tapering conical spout. The bottom of the vessel on one side displays a crouching cargador – a worker tasked with carrying heavy loads – with bent legs, a downturned face, and a russet-hued headband which stretches across his forehead and back behind his “load,” the crosshatch-adorned body meant to replicate a woven basket. Particularly interesting is the addition of a small panel of padding across his forehead and beneath the strap, perhaps meant to ease the strain of the hefty load on his head. Colored with red-brown slip atop a cream-hued ground, this is a fabulous example from ancient Peru! Size: 7.375″ W x 8.5″ H (18.7 cm x 21.6 cm).

Condition: Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks and chips to body, base, figure, and spout, with fading to some pigmentation, and small loss to bottom of vessel. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas, and some scattered areas of mineral deposits.
