European Bronze Age Spiral Armlet w/ Stunning Patina- Lot 58b, Auction 6/7/2018

Sold

Europe, Bronze Age, ca. late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE. A beautiful bronze armlet formed from a continuous coiled spiral, with a pointed terminal on one end and a flat terminal on the other. The armlet spirals around approximately fifteen times, with a strong, raised medial ridge present throughout each curve, perhaps to resemble the spine of a lengthy serpent. The entire accessory is enveloped in a stunning emerald-green patina which is smooth on the exterior and slightly rough on the interior. Examples like this were most likely created to be worn during the Bronze Age, and were buried with their owner as a prized possession. Armbands are some of the most famous symbols of Bronze-Age Europe, though it is unclear if they were worn for actual physical protection; however, scholars suggest that they had a religious or ritual protective purpose. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 4″ H (10.2 cm); 5″ H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Expected age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks to portions of band, and minor discoloration, otherwise intact and excellent. Gorgeous green patina and light earthen deposits throughout.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private United Kingdom collection, acquired in the 1970s to 1980s
