Miniature Greek Apulian Black Glazed Bell Kantharos- Lot 12, Auction 9/24/2018

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery kantharos with a squat footed base, a wide base, gently flaring walls, a rolled rim, and a pair of applied strap handles. Both the interior and exterior boast black-glazed surfaces with scattered areas of faint silvery iridescence. Size: 3.5″ W x 2.25″ H (8.9 cm x 5.7 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, small chips to rim, handles, body, and base, with fading to glaze coloration in some areas, and one large but stable hairline fissure on one side. Light earthen deposits and scattered areas of faint silver iridescence.
