Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, late Sican (Lambayeque) to early Chimu, ca. 900 to 1100 CE. This polychromatic textile fragment is comprised of tightly-woven fibers in hues of burgundy, gold, teal, pistachio, blue, cream, and black. The composition includes five distinct sections, each containing two abstract warrior-like figures which feature multi-armed helmets, colorful garments, disc-shaped eyes, and large oblong feet. Each section of warriors is accompanied by a plethora of different geometric motifs such as diamonds, stepped patterns, and colorful quadrilateral areas. Mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 17.25″ L x 4.875″ W (43.8 cm x 12.4 cm).

Condition: Expected fraying around peripheries, losses to sides and corners, and minor staining. Minor pigmentation loss throughout.

Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia from 1971 to 1972
