Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Raven Site Ruin, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Greater Salado, Upper Gila, Roosevelt Red (Salado Polychrome) Ware, Pinto Polychrome, ca. 1250 to 1350 CE. A fine pottery bowl of the Pinto Polychrome type with elaborate black on white decoration adorning the interior and a red-slipped exterior. Presenting a hemispherical form, the vessel is decorated with opposed solid, hatched, and zigzag designs organized in broad, rectilinear motifs that envelop the interior walls, save for a rectangular area at the center of the basin. Though appearing abstract to the modern viewer, these mesmerizing patterns once held great meaning to the Ancestral Puebloans and conveyed messages regarding families, alliances, and weather. A wonderful, published example of Pinto Polychrome pottery! Size: 9.3″ L x 9.1″ W x 4.3″ H (23.6 cm x 23.1 cm x 10.9 cm)
