Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden canoe prow of crocodilian form with a pair of abstract anthropomorphic faces protruding from the top, one of which bears a nose so large it doubles as the prow’s handle. Size: 22.25″ L x 11.375″ W x 7.25″ H (56.5 cm x 28.9 cm x 18.4 cm)
Condition: Abrasions and minor softening to some finer details, and small chips in several areas, otherwise intact and very good. Nice forms and details.
Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
