Carved wooden ceremonial dance rattle, in the form of a bird. Two separately carved sections, hollowed cylindrical handle and compressed ovoid body, surmounted by flattened wings and tapering to a small upraised head. Features painted in dark red, black and white, inscribed on the underside 978, and has an early partial collection label affixed. A simple and elegant example, and certainly ceremonially used by a shaman for decades. Really nice. Old custom metal base.
Size: 9-1/2″L
Condition: Excellent old surface patina.
Provenance: Ex. Mark Blackburn collection. Ex. Christie’s auction “American Indian Art”, sale 1389, 2004, lot 290. Ex. Bill Henderson collection, Olympia, WA.
