Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, Maya culture, ca. 610 to 900 CE. A finely proportioned Maya pottery cylinder vessel distinguished by bold diagonal fluting that spirals gracefully around the body. The vessel is formed with straight walls and a flat base, its tall cylindrical shape characteristic of Classic period Maya drinking or presentation vessels. The exterior surface is covered in carefully modeled diagonal ridges that create a rhythmic twisting pattern across the red-slipped body. These flutes not only enliven the form with a sense of movement but also demonstrate the potter’s control of the clay before firing. Near the base, darker firing clouds and mineral deposits produce a mottled band of gray and black tones, a natural result of kiln atmosphere and burial conditions that adds visual depth to the vessel’s surface. Cylinder vessels of this type were commonly used by the Maya elite for the consumption of cacao beverages or other ceremonial drinks. While many examples were painted with hieroglyphic texts or figural scenes, others relied on sculptural surface treatment such as fluting or ribbing to achieve decorative effect. The present example highlights the elegance of Maya ceramic craftsmanship through its sculptural simplicity and dynamic spiral texture.

Condition: A few stable hairline fissures and miniscule pitting in areas. Light surface wear with a few nicks and abrasions as shown, commensurate with age. Otherwise, intact and excellent with impressive preservation of pigments and decoration. Old collection label on interior wall.
