Maya Gypsum Effigy Vessel with Zoomorphic Head (Auction 2026-06-05, Lot 60)
$578.25
Pre-Columbian, Honduras, Maya culture, ca. 600 to 900 CE. An effigy ritual vessel carved from a calcium sulfate stone, likely gypsum alabaster, showing a soft, granular surface with natural weathering and softening over the ages. The form suggests a once taller cylindrical body with a projecting zoomorphic, possibly avian head extending from one side. Subtle remnants of bent forelegs appear beneath the head, with additional small supports on the base. The surface retains a chalky texture with scattered darker inclusions, consistent with gypsum. Size: 5″ W x 6″ H (12.7 cm x 15.2 cm)
Provenance: private collection of S. Saunders, Nogales Arizona, USA collection
Condition: Damaged. Heavy weathering and losses as shown. The rim is delicate and very thin, handle with care. Small perforations through the side. Losses to fine details in animal head. Mineral deposits on the interior.
