In stock

Oceania, Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A distinctive wooden kiakavo club with a hooked head, polished surface, and a scored area on the underside of the curved head. This spurred shape is reminiscent of a gunstock or snake head. The Fijians had several similar types of “gunstock clubs” and the distinction between types is unclear in several credible sources. This example could be used for warfare, but many pieces were made for dancing rituals. Size: 37″ L x 4″ W (94 cm x 10.2 cm)

Condition: Pressure fissures and abrasions. Old repair with nails to shaft splintered area. Chips and abrasions. Lustrous patina throughout.

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 2000s
