West Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden maiden mask displaying 3 highly stylized faces of beauty and grace. The dark eyelashes, lips, and coiffures are intended to stand in stark contrast to the white-painted women’s faces meant to symbolize purity, elegance, and femininity. Size: 6.875″ L x 6″ W x 16.875″ H (17.5 cm x 15.2 cm x 42.9 cm); 19.25″ H (48.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Condition: Fissures to wood in scattered areas, with abrasions and light fading to pigment, otherwise in great condition. Great facial expressions!
