West Africa, Liberia / Ivory Coast border region, Grebo people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE.
A striking Grebo face mask carved from a single piece of dense wood, characterized by its bold geometric features and powerful sculptural presence. The mask presents a rectangular form with a sharply defined vertical ridge forming the nose, flanked by four pronounced, circular eyes projecting outward in relief. The open rectangular mouth has an iron sheet forming a row of jagged teeth. Along the upper edge natural feather plumes remain attached. Grebo masks such as this were traditionally used in ceremonies linked to warfare and protection, representing spirits who safeguarded the community and intimidated enemies. Size: 11″ W x 32″ H (27.9 cm x 81.3 cm)

Condition: Losses to upper corners of wood along the attached feathers. The verso also has old losses. Stable wood splinter above right eyes. Feathers are bent and torn, but most are firmly attached. Dark patina to wood.

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection
