Lot 94, Auction 4/20/2026: African Congolese Kusu Wood Standing Figure
$292.50
In stock
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kusu culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A sculptural Kusu wood figure carved with elongated proportions and a poised, inward-focused stance, the hands drawn together at the abdomen in a gesture of restraint and inner balance. The head rises dramatically above the body, crowned by an extended, mask-like form with incised linear patterns that frame the face and emphasize the closed eyes and contemplative expression. Such figures are associated with Kusu spiritual traditions, where abstraction and exaggeration serve symbolic ends rather than naturalism. The polished surface and confident carving suggest an object made for ritual presence, embodying ideals of composure, authority, and ancestral connection. Balanced between elegance and gravity, the figure stands as a quiet but commanding example of mid-20th century Central African sculptural language. Size: 2.7″ W x 10.5″ H (6.9 cm x 26.7 cm); 12″ H (30.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Condition: Stable fissures throughout and some weathering and abrasions to surface commensurate with age. Otherwise, intact and very nice with rich patina and good detail.
Provenance: private Louisville, Kentucky, USA collection, acquired 1990-1998
