East Africa, Tanzania, Zaramo / Kwere people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand carved wooden standing figure, known as a “mwana hiti”, in the form of a nude woman with a distinctive double-crested hairstyle. This type of carving served as a fertility figure and a doll that was given to young girls to care for and teach motherly instincts, also acting as a charm for future childbearing and healthy babies. Size: 3″ L x 2.2″ W x 12″ H (7.6 cm x 5.6 cm x 30.5 cm); 12.5″ H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Losses to the feet as shown. Stable pressure fissures radiating from the verso to front of body. Some surface nicks and abrasions.

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995
