Africa, Cameroon, Bamum or Tikar peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A pottery pygmy guardian, also known as house guardian, with a shell ornament tied around the waist with cloth, and the verso has a large vent hole. A thick necklace and bangles are added to his limbs, and the surface of the face and body are incised with tattoos / ritual scarification. Size: 5.5″ L x 3″ W x 7.5″ H (14 cm x 7.6 cm x 19 cm)
Condition: Stable fissure and break line on necklace. Repaired, left leg reattached and adhesive residue on the surfaces. Mineral deposits.
Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995
