$455.00
In stock
Near East / Central Asia, Persia (Iran), Qajar Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A brass ovoid base for a water pipe (hookah) vessel, known in Persian culture as a qalyan, composed of a coconut or calabash shell encased within a brass body enriched with silver inlays and black enamel. The top features a wide circular opening for fitting the vertical stem that supported the brazier or tobacco bowl, while a tubular spout to one side received the long mouthpiece stem. The organic shell within formed the watertight chamber that cooled the smoke as it passed through, its dark woody surface visible between the columnar openwork panels. Around the upper shoulder runs a band of black enamel set with 36% to 68% silver-gilt floral and vine motifs, lending shimmering contrast to this refined smoking accessory. Size: 11″ L x 4.5″ W (27.9 cm x 11.4 cm); silver quality: 36% to 68%
Condition: Bending to the terminal stem on the base. Abrasions and scratches, with some chips / losses to black enamel inlays. Indentation to rim of stem fitting, and very heavy resin build up on the interior from heavy smoking use. Green oxidation and patina.
Provenance: private Rogers, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Bosio collection, Miami, Florida, USA, 1960-2000
