Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A rare, hand-built pottery jar with a spherical base, a tapered shoulder, and a rising rim bearing a stylized human portrait. The face presents with petite eyes, a prominent nose, a protruding chin, and pierced ears along the back, and the entire vessel – face included – is decorated with ample black and red linear motifs. The most exceptional Casas Grandes vessels usually have Ramos-style designs, and examples such as this show how this style required great skill and aesthetic vision. Size: 4.58″ Diameter x 5.875″ H (11.6 cm x 14.9 cm)

Condition: Professional repair to face rim with restoration along break lines, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and fading to pigment, with light pitting, and pitting in scattered areas, otherwise in nice condition. Great preservation to original pigment across body. Previous inventory label beneath base.
