Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, ca. 300 to 500 CE. A set of 9 hand-carved shell pieces that comprise an abstract anthropomorphic jaguar figure. The arms and legs are bent and carved from light gray nacre (mother-of-pearl) while the 4 rectangular chest pieces – as well as the rabbit-like head – are carved from noteworthy pink Spondylus shell. Size (head): 0.91″ W x 1.11″ H (2.3 cm x 2.8 cm); (display stand): 2.5″ L x 4.9″ W x 7.125″ H (6.4 cm x 12.4 cm x 18.1 cm)
Condition: Minor nicks, abrasions, and earthen deposits, otherwise in great condition. Individual pieces are attached to backing via metal prongs.
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s
