In stock
West Africa, lower Niger River valley, Niger and Burkina Faso, Bura culture, ca. 3rd to 13th century CE. A robust Bura pottery tripod pot with a rounded, bulbous body raised on three stout legs, the surface animated by horizontal ribbing and a vertical spine-like ridge. Made for stability and endurance, such vessels are associated with the Bura-Asinda-Sikka complex of Niger and are thought to have served ritual, domestic, or funerary functions, their grounded form echoing the culture’s sculptural clarity and reverence for earthbound strength. Size: 8″ W x 11.9″ H (20.3 cm x 30.2 cm)
Condition: One leg has been professionally reattached with restoration over break line. Chipping to rim, as well as weathering and abrasions to surface as shown. Otherwise, very nice presentation with scattered earthen deposits.
Provenance: private Louisville, Kentucky, USA collection, acquired 1990-1998
