$637.50

In stock

Latin America, Northern Mexico, & United States, New Mexico, Chimayo culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A collection of 3 petite Chimayo square sampler weavings, made from vibrant wool. The fourth and largest textile is a cotton table runner (likely machine made) with a colorful front and a plain backing. Chimayo culture is deeply rooted in the history and traditions of the village of Chimayo in northern New Mexico, USA. Known for its adobe architecture, vibrant artistic community, and the revered Santuario de Chimayo, the culture reflects a blend of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo influences – especially with Navajo textiles. Samplers were made by weavers as swatches for the patterning and colors before committing to a full-length project, and these smaller weavings were popular purchases amongst tourists who wanted portable souvenirs. Size: 54″ L x 16″ W (137.2 cm x 40.6 cm)

Condition: Staining and discoloration to the surfaces. Losses to wefts and small holes on the samplers. Areas of encrusted residue on the samplers that could be spot cleaned. Cotton table runner is intact. Good pre-owned condition.

Provenance: private Cripple Creek, Colorado, USA collection
