Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Acoma Pueblo, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful pottery canteen, hand-formed and painted with a leather strap tied to both handles. The Surface is slipped in white and red hues then overpainted with black geometric and fineline motifs. We suspect this was made by a member of the famous Lewis family; the fineline patterns were made famous by Acoma artist Lucy M. Lewis (1890-1992), have since been used by many of her descendants and other Pueblo artists. Lewis’ designs were inspired by the Mimbres-style pottery of her Ancestral Puebloan people, and she did not start signing her pottery until the 1950s. Size: 6″ Diameter x 7″ H (15.2 cm x 17.8 cm)

Condition: One handle is repaired with nearly indiscernible break line with light overpainting to that area. Rest of vessel is great vintage / antique condition with minor surface scuffs and nicks. Unsigned, old inventory label on the base.
