In stock

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 450 to 550 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery stirrup vessel in the likeness of a seated male figure, perhaps of noble ranking, with only a single eye. The man sits with hands placed neatly atop tucked knees while dressed in a white and red tunic and thick-brimmed hat. The left eye is closed as if missing the ocular sphere while the other is open and attentive. Size: 6″ L x 4.9″ W x 6.8″ H (15.2 cm x 12.4 cm x 17.3 cm)

Condition: Restoration to 2 areas on tip of nose, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light fading to original pigment, otherwise in excellent condition. Nice preservation to finer facial details and pigment in most areas.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Bill Freeman collection, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, 1990s
