Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Huari to Chancay transition period, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. An expressive wooden funerary mask of rectangular form with a bulbous nose, pursed lips, and piercing eyes, The red-painted countenance is topped with a textile cap made from rattan fiber that imbues it with a personalized presentation. Mummy masks like this were attached to the front of textile mummy bundles containing deceased human remains. Size: 7″ L x 12.25″ H (17.8 cm x 31.1 cm); 12.75″ H (32.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Stable but deep fissures across the wood, radiating over the nose and cheeks. Old breaks and losses to the top of the wood. It is unclear if cap is original to the mask. Fading to pigment. Mineral deposits and faint remains of textile imprinted on the wood verso from the mummy wrappings.
