Lot 54, Auction 5/11/2024: Two Ancient Nayarit Redware Pottery Vessels, Bowl & Jar

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A set of 2 hand-built and stone-burnished pottery vessels, each exhibiting their own hue of red-orange on their respective surfaces. The spherical jar features a gently tapered neck as well as intricate white-painted linear patterns across the surfaces. The larger bowl exhibits broad brush strokes across the interior and exterior surfaces, and fine-line black lines course around the bottom of the basin and densely across the exterior. Size of largest: 6.57″ Diameter x 4.125″ H (16.7 cm x 10.5 cm)

Condition: Each vessel with small chips to rim, fading to pigment, and light earthen deposits, otherwise in excellent condition. Nice preservation to motifs in most areas.

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
