Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. A hand-carved stone axe god figure, so called because scholars believe this artifact type to have been formed from broken or otherwise discarded stone axe heads. The obverse side features a series of string-cut grooves that create the slender legs, diagonal arms, broad nose, deep neck line, and slit-form eyes. Size: 1.17″ L x 2.47″ W x 6.86″ H (3 cm x 6.3 cm x 17.4 cm)

Condition: Losses to top of head and areas around periphery, with softening to some string-cut details, and light earthen deposits, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to figural details across obverse.

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
