Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A Chinesco pottery standing figure, modeled with broad legs and a bulbous head, its facial features rendered with small impressed eyes, mouth, and rounded ears. Remains of red pigment highlight the neck, waist, and lower legs, contrasting with the lighter buff surface mottled by manganese mineral deposits from long burial. The simplified yet expressive form reflects the distinctive abstract aesthetic of Chinesco ceramic artistry, created as part of West Mexico’s ancient shaft tomb tradition. Size: 3.25″ W x 6.8″ H (8.3 cm x 17.3 cm); 7.25″ H (18.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Condition: Chip to the nose, but otherwise intact. Nice manganese deposits and mineral encrustations. Comes on a modern display stand.
