$1,402.50

In stock

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-carved wooden funerary mask of broad form displaying a stylized, wide-eyed countenance. The convex visage is covered with red pigment, perhaps cinnabar-based, that nicely frames the white eyes and bitumen-based pupils. Bound around the forehead is a camelid or cotton textile headwrap bearing a central panel of abstract avian creatures. Size: 2.75″ L x 9.5″ W x 9.5″ H (7 cm x 24.1 cm x 24.1 cm); 11″ H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Extensive overpainting across face visible with ultraviolet light. Textile headwrap and wood mask are likely not original to one another but are both from the stated time period. Abrasions, chips, and fissures to wood, with expected desiccation to textile headwrap, and chips to eyes, otherwise in nice condition. Great facial expression. Previous inventory label on verso.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-Eugene Lions collection, Geneva, Switzerland
