Lot 55a, Auction 4/12/2026: Maya Polychrome Incised Bowl of Monkey & Reptile Motifs

Pre-Columbian, Maya, Copador style, Honduras or El Salvador, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A petite hand-built pottery bowl slipped in warm orange, with two painted dark bands encircling the interior. The underside bears a quadrant motif, while the exterior walls are divided into four panels. These alternate between incised and painted depictions of stylized monkey-like figures and reptilian creatures with elongated tongues. Size: 5.5″ Diameter x 2.25″ H (14 cm x 5.7 cm)

Condition: Repaired from several pieces with infill and overpainting along break lines. Heavy weathering and abrasions throughout with chips and nicks to the surface. Mineral and earthen deposits throughout. Fair condition.
