Rena G. Leslie (Hopi, 1929-1980). Painted pottery vase, mid-20th century. Signed with artist’s name and hallmark on underside of base. A beautiful pottery vase made by Hopi artist Rena Leslie and hand-painted in black and red on beige decoration reminiscent of Sikyatki pottery. The vessel displays a towering cylindrical form that expands to a broad shoulder and slightly inward curving rim. Two dramatic zoomorphic designs curve up the exterior walls, each filled with scrolling, geometric, and linear designs. Rena Leslie’s Hopi name translates to “Yellow Cloud,” which is why her hallmark symbol of a cloud and rain accompanies her signature on each piece she creates. Her pottery shows only infrequently at public auctions perhaps reflecting her early death and shortened production years. A monumental example of 20th-century Sikyatki revival pottery! Size: 6.25″ Diameter x 14.25″ H (15.9 cm x 36.2 cm)

Condition: Signed with artist’s name and hallmark on underside of base. Professionally repaired with restoration and repainting over break lines. Some light surface wear as shown, but otherwise, excellent presentation with clear imagery and nice remaining pigments.

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
