Lot 110, Auction 5/11/2024: Native American Beaded Belts, Sash, & Garter

$701.25

In stock

Native American / First Nations, Northern /Midwestern United States or Canada, Blackfeet, Chippewa / Ojibwe, and likely Lakota (Sioux), ca. early to mid-20th century. A loom beaded sash, garter, and belt by various Native American / First Nations tribes. The largest belt is perhaps Sioux made, and has a wool felt backing and leather ties. The garter with a fleur-de-lis pattern is probably influenced by French-Canadian culture, and the slender sash last might be a rope necklace or a belt. Loom-woven beadwork involves weaving intricate patterns using small seed beads, thread, and a loom. The technique allows for precise and detailed designs which are visible on both sides, rather than just embroidered to a cloth. Size of large belt: 28.5″ L x 1.75″ W (72.4 cm x 4.4 cm)

Please note this item may fall under the Safeguard Tribal Objects of Patrimony Act and is not eligible for international shipping. Native American, Alaska Native, & Native Hawaiian objects are only eligible to ship within the United States.

Condition: Fraying threads and losses to tassel strands on the fleur-de-lis sash. Thin rope necklace / sash is intact and very good. Loss to some threads on largest belt, but beadwork is intact, and otherwise great condition.

Provenance: private Cripple Creek, Colorado, USA collection
