South Asia, India, Naga peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A necklace crafted from a vegetal fiber cord, adorned with glass trade beads, and featuring a brass face pendant. The pendant showcases 4 brass heads, symbolizing decapitated trophies. This imagery harkens back to the historical practice of headhunting among certain Naga tribes, which persisted into the mid-20th century despite being banned under British colonial rule. The Naga people, comprising tribes from northeastern India and northwestern Burma, are renowned for their craftsmanship, particularly in jewelry and brassworking. This necklace is a testament to their cultural richness and artistic expression. During special rituals and ceremonies on the Naga calendar, both men and women adorn themselves with ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including striking necklaces like this one. Size of strand doubled: 20″ L (50.8 cm); pendant: 5″ L x 2″ W (12.7 cm x 5.1 cm)

Condition: Some minor nicks and pitting to beads. Dark toning and patina on the brass, and softening to details. Overall good condition.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
