Lot 45, Auction 4/19/2024: Luristan / Achaemenid Ritualistic Bronze Dagger

$446.25

In stock

Near East, northwestern Iran / Turkey, Luristan to Achaemenid, Bronze to Iron Age, ca. 2000 to 500 BCE. A massive paddle like blade cast from bronze, a broad lanceolate form that tapers to a rounded tip. The shoulder peripheries provide a natural rest / guard for a gripped hand to press against. The thick handle has a flattened grip, and the overall blunted and smoothed edges and size suggests this was not intended for cutting or stabbing, but perhaps a ritualistic item or grave good. Size: 15″ L x 3.2″ W (38.1 cm x 8.1 cm)

Condition: Stable hairline fissures on the center of blade. Green patina and mineral deposits throughout. Intact and overall great condition.

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection, purchased from Pax Romana Auctions, July 26, 2020
