$573.75

In stock

South Asia, South India, Tamil Nadu, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved shrine panel depicting the elephant-headed god Ganesha who wears a lengthy chain below his belly and a conical crown atop his head. To either side of the sizable deity is a female attendant, partially nude, holding a large fruit or sweet treat above their head. The figures are all beneath an incised archway surmounted by the head of an abstract mythological creature. The design of this panel suggests that it was part of a larger architectural element at one time. Size: 1.1″ L x 8.25″ W x 8.4″ H (2.8 cm x 21 cm x 21.3 cm)

Condition: Losses to a few areas around peripheries and verso as shown. Abrasions and nicks, with minor softening to finer details, light fading to pigment, and a few stable hairline fissures, otherwise in great condition. Nice patina throughout.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Pennsylvania, USA collection
