Western Europe, France, Paris, Medieval period, ca. mid-13th century CE. A wonderful vellum leaf from a Medieval portable or pocket Bible handwritten in Paris and possibly produced by the Leber Workshop. Written in gothic book hand, the text is comprised of 2 columns of Latin from the book of Exodus in mostly black ink with select letters in red and blue inks. The top of the leaf is inscribed “EXO” on one side and “DVS” on the other to spell out “EXODUS.” On one side, a 6-line “F” is featured in the first column and a 2-line “A” is in the second, while the other side shows a 2-line “S,” and scrolling penwork flourishes adorn the margins of both. Size of leaf: 4″ W x 5.6″ H (10.2 cm x 14.2 cm); of custom matte: 12″ W x 16″ H (30.5 cm x 40.6 cm)

Condition: Vellum leaf from a pocket Bible. Some tearing to one edge from removal from codex, as well as small area of loss below text, light wrinkling, and some minor staining; none of which affects text. Otherwise, nice preservation of pigments and clear script. Modern pencil marking in lower right corner. Set in custom matte with protective plastic film on front and old label on verso of matte.

Provenance: private Las Vegas, Nevada, USA collection
