Lot 341, Auction 3/19/2026: Two European 18th C. Wooden Costrel Travel Canteens
$390.00
In stock
United States or Western Europe, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A pair of turned wooden barrel-form drinking vessels, likely made for travel or field use. Each example is carved with evenly spaced incised rings and pierced with a round drinking aperture on the long side, a practical feature that allows the vessel to be carried, filled, and used with ease. The larger vessel is strengthened with iron bands at either end and retains its original cork stopper, while the end face is marked with the owner’s initials, “JK.” Size of larger: 5.5″ L x 4.25″ W (14 cm x 10.8 cm)
Condition: One iron band is removable due to wood shrinkage, and two large stable fissures through the wood on larger vessel. The smaller has scratches and abrasions from use, but otherwise intact. Heavy patina and surface weathering from use.
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
